Self-Care for Independent Business Owners

As an independent business owner I have to manage a lot of different things, so I think it’s important to take some time out for some self-care and reflection…

Self-care for independent business owners is a must. It’s far too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day details of running a business and to let your own mental wellbeing slide.

Prior to lockdown 1.0, my favourite thing to do was to spend a little time taking time out for myself once a week. This became known as my Tuesday Treat. Sometimes, I would head out for breakfast or lunch, other times I’d head out for a few hours to just sit and drink tea that I hadn’t had to make myself. The important thing was that I was away from my computer and my studio indulging in some much needed self-care.

One of my favourite places to visit was, and still is, Beech House in Amersham, near my home. I love the decor and atmosphere in there and I never felt rushed to leave after eating my meal or drinking my tea. Wherever you choose to spend your self-care time, you should feel comfortable and unhurried.

They say that a change is as good as a rest, and I believe this. Sitting in a different location, having some tea, a spot of lunch and making to-do lists, planning my social media, or just sketching in Procreate really made a difference to my week. It’s such a pleasure to be able to take your time over something and have a different view while working on things.

Unfortunately, as well all know, Covid happened and things changed dramatically, including putting a stop to my Tuesday Treats! However I look forward to returning as often as I possibly can when the situation has improved and Beech House is allowed to reopen!

In the meantime, I’m going to take my own advice and work out a way to still have that self-care time on a Tuesday. It’s more likely to be half an hour sat in the garden reading my book BUT it will hopefully have a similar effect on my wellbeing!
