An Indie Gift Guide for Book Lovers

This indie gift guide for book lovers and bookworms features products from indie businesses that doesn’t include book vouchers or best-seller books!

What can you buy the book lover in your life without resorting to the usual gift vouchers or the latest best-seller?

You would think that buying a gift for a book lover or avid reader would be simple. You just get them the latest best-seller right? Wrong. Choosing a book is as personal as choosing jewellery or art. In order to be confident in choosing a book for someone else you need to know them inside out. If that’s you, then congrats, you’re doing a sterling job but if you’re just going for what seems popular you may well be wasting your money. This is why I’ve written this Indie Gift Guide for Book Lovers.

So what gift can you buy a bookworm?

Well, it’s not easy but I’m going to try and give you some great tips for finding the perfect gift for the book lover in your life. And the best part of this advice is… it’s all from small independent businesses. Not only are you giving your loved one a gift that shows you’ve thought this through but you’re also supporting an indie maker make their dream a reality. Win win.

So without further ado, here’s my run down of 7 great indie gift ideas for book lovers and avid readers… Enjoy!

Reading Journal

Sherbet Lane

This cute A5 reading journal was originally created as part of a book themed box from the Sherbet Box stationery subscription club. The reading journal has 28 pages and is the perfect place to record your thoughts on the books that you are reading, or plan to read. There is space to document, not only the title and author, but also when you started and finished the book. Plus who recommended it to you, your rating, and your own personal book review. Handmade Abstract Bookmarks

Le Cheval Fou

If like me you’re a bit ‘old school’ and love the smell and feel of a real paper book then you will definitely be needing a bookmark. No more using scraps of paper, envelopes and receipts. These stylish handmade abstract bookmarks are all completely unique, one-off designs. But these aren’t just bookmarks, they are works of art in their own right! The bookmarks are created by hand directly onto 400gsm thick card using a combination of acrylic paints, watercolours, inks and fine line pens.

Literary Typography Print

Happy Stuff Studio

This bright and colourful giclee typography print from Victoria at Happy Stuff Studio features a quote from one of her favourite books, ‘The Lonely Londoners’ by Sam Selvon. About this book Victoria says “…a tragic and at many times comical account of the trials faced by West Indian immigrants to the UK. It’s a love song to London, and a snapshot of the hidden and not-so-hidden racism in British society. This quote is from a gorgeously lyrical passage that interrupts the realism of novel, and is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read.” Victoria’s love for this book shines through this vibrant literary art print!

Fay Dixon Design

What self-respecting book lover doesn’t also enjoy curling up on the sofa with a cup of tea (my personal choice) or coffee as they sit back to immerse themselves in someone else’s world? This monochrome ceramic mug features the word (?) ‘Shhhhhh’ all around the mug so anyone tempted to interrupt you should definitely get the point!

Ninja Book Box

Ninja Book Box is something a little different. It is the UK’s only multi-genre subscription book box dedicated to independently published books. Every quarter the guys at Ninja Book Box choose a book and then collaborate with other small businesses to provide a gift box that is not only useful but also beautiful. Oh, and did I mention they also have a great online shop stocking hundreds of preloved indie books too, so there’s something for everyone.
